Every athlete thinks they know how strong they are. Usually the answer is some version of "pretty strong" — measured against their teammates, their friend group, or the guy next to them in the weight room.
That is not a standard. That is a vibe. And it is the reason so many athletes are shocked when they finally get tested honestly.
Strong, or Strong For Your Group?
Being the strongest kid on your team means very little if the whole team is undertrained. Being the weakest in an elite room might mean you are still ahead of 95% of athletes your age. Comparison only means something when you compare against the right standard — your age, your training age, your sport, and your bodyweight.
That last one is the one athletes miss most. Which brings us to the number that actually matters.
Relative Strength Wins
An athlete who deadlifts 315 at 150 pounds is, for sport, more useful than an athlete who deadlifts 405 at 250 pounds. The second number is bigger. The first athlete is stronger where it counts — relative to the body they have to move around a field or court.
This is why we care less about the raw number on the bar and more about strength relative to bodyweight. Sport is not powerlifting. You are not trying to move a maximal barbell once. You are trying to move yourself, fast, repeatedly, for four quarters. Strength-to-weight is the number that translates.
The bar does not care how strong you feel. It only reports what is actually there.
Rough Ballparks (and Why They Are Only a Start)
Trained athletes are often working toward things like a squat and deadlift meaningfully above bodyweight, a bench near bodyweight, and chin-ups with clean strict reps. Those are useful mile-markers.
But a standard printed in an article cannot see you. It does not know your training age, your injury history, your sport, or how your movement holds up under load. A number you hit with a rounded back and a sketchy knee is not the same as a number you own cleanly. Which is the whole point of testing in person.
Why we test both sides
We also test left versus right. An athlete can hit a "good" number on a bilateral lift while hiding a real left-to-right imbalance underneath it — the kind of asymmetry that shows up later as a hamstring pull or a stress injury. The barbell average looks fine. The athlete is not. You only catch that by measuring it.
You cannot improve what you were only guessing at.
What a Real Standard Gives You
When you have honest numbers — strength, relative strength, left versus right, and how they stack up against athletes like you — training stops being a guess. You know whether you are actually behind, actually ahead, or strong in one place and dangerously weak in another. You know what to chase first.

- Your biggest weakness identified before it becomes an injury
- A way to prove progress is happening — or catch it when it is not
- Priorities set by data, not by whatever you already like doing
The Bottom Line
"Pretty strong" is not a number. It is a story you tell yourself, usually graded against the wrong group. Real standards — measured against the right athletes, adjusted for bodyweight, and checked side to side — tell you the truth.
The truth is more useful than the flattering guess every single time. Get the number. Then go beat it.
