Every athlete who wants a bigger vertical does the same thing: they jump more. More box jumps, more max-effort verticals, more "just try harder." And for most of them, the number barely moves.
Jumping more does not make you jump higher. If it did, every kid who plays two hours of pickup a day would dunk. A vertical jump is a power problem, and power is a very specific thing you have to build on purpose.
Power Is Force, Applied Fast
Your vertical comes down to one equation: how much force you can put into the ground, and how fast you can put it there. Both halves matter, and most athletes are missing one of them.
- Not enough force. If you are not strong enough, there is simply not enough engine to launch your bodyweight. You cannot express power you do not have.
- Force too slow. Plenty of strong athletes jump poorly because they produce force like a diesel truck — lots of it, but slowly. A jump happens in under a quarter of a second. If your force shows up late, it never makes it into the jump.
This is why a random pile of jump drills fails. It does not know which of these two problems you have. Train the wrong one and you spin your wheels.
You cannot express power you have not built — and you cannot build it by guessing which piece you are missing.
The Strength Nobody Skips
For most developing athletes, the fastest path to a bigger vertical is getting stronger relative to their bodyweight. A trap-bar deadlift, a squat pattern that fits their body, hip and hamstring strength — this is the foundation. It raises the ceiling on how much force is even available to launch.
Strength is not the whole answer, but it is almost always the first answer for an athlete who has never trained it properly. You are building the engine before you tune it.
Then You Teach It To Be Fast
Once there is strength to work with, you train the nervous system to deliver it quickly. That is what real plyometrics are for — not exhausting jump circuits, but crisp, quality contacts that teach the body to hit the ground hard and leave fast.
The metric that tells the truth
This is where measurement matters. We look at things like reactive strength — how well you turn a landing into an explosive next jump — and how your explosive strength compares to your starting strength. Those numbers tell us whether you need more force or more speed, so the training targets the real gap instead of guessing.
The athletes who add inches are the ones who trained the right half.
Why Volume Backfires
Here is the trap. Jump training is neural. Quality collapses the moment you get tired, and a tired jump trains a slow jump. Grinding out fifty box jumps at the end of practice does not build power — it rehearses fatigue. Fewer, sharper, fully-recovered contacts beat high-volume junk every time.
More is not the answer here. It is often the reason the number is stuck.
The Bottom Line
A bigger vertical is not a mystery and it is not about wanting it more. It is about knowing whether you need force or speed, then training that specific quality with enough strength underneath it and enough freshness to do it well.
Test it. Find the gap. Train the gap. That is how inches actually get added.
