But intensity in the interval sense is not the same as intensity in the speed-training sense. A hard 30-second shuttle interval is not building max velocity or explosive power — it's building your engine's ability to tolerate and clear fatigue. Different system, different adaptation.

Stack a brutal interval session the day before either one and you've capped the very adaptation you were chasing.

Treat it as one tool among several, not the whole toolbox. Speed and power work go first in the week when you're freshest. Strength work gets built around recovery windows. HIIT fills the conditioning gap — dosed to what your sport actually demands, not maxed out because it feels productive.

That's the assessment question in plain terms: do you actually need more conditioning, or do you need more force? Most athletes assume the answer without ever testing it, which is exactly how HIIT ends up doing 80% of the program and none of the job that was actually missing.
