Why Do Athletes Get Slow When They Bulk?
It's almost never the muscle itself — it's how it was added. A large, fast calorie surplus adds fat along with muscle, and extra bodyweight without added force production is just extra weight to move. Add in a training split that's all volume and no intent (endless accessory work, no real strength progression), and you get size without the force production to carry it.
The fix isn't avoiding muscle gain — it's controlling the rate and pairing it with the right training. A slow, controlled surplus (think 200-350 calories above maintenance, not 1,000) keeps fat gain minimal while still supporting growth.
What Should the Training Actually Look Like?
Lead with strength — heavy compound lifts (squat, hinge, press, pull patterns) with real progressive overload. Add hypertrophy-style accessory work around that base, not instead of it. And keep speed and power work in the program the whole time; muscle built alongside speed work stays useful, muscle built in isolation from it just gets carried around.
