What Makes Change of Direction Its Own Skill?

Redirecting under control takes eccentric strength — the ability to control the body while decelerating — along with footwork, body positioning, and the coordination to accept force and reapply it in a new direction almost instantly. None of that shows up in a 40-yard dash. It shows up in a defender closing space, a receiver breaking a route, or a soccer player cutting past a defender.

Why Do Most Programs Only Train the Straight Line?

Linear speed work is easier to program and easier to measure, so it gets most of the attention.
